The short version
Your salary never leaves your browser: calculations run locally on both the website and the extension. The website counts visits with cookie-free analytics, keeps salary figures out of it, and lets you turn it off. The extension collects nothing at all. If you use the contact form, we receive what you choose to send (delivered by Netlify). Full detail below.

Overview
myTakeHome is a free UK salary calculator available as a website and a Chrome browser extension. This policy explains the small amount of data we handle and the choices you have. The calculator itself collects nothing: every calculation runs locally in your browser. The only data we ever receive is cookie-free usage analytics on the website, which you can turn off, and anything you send us through the contact form.
Who is responsible for your data
myTakeHome is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. That means we decide why and how it is handled, and we are accountable for it under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018.
myTakeHome is operated from the United Kingdom. For anything to do with your data, including any of the rights set out below, email hello@mytakehome.co.uk and we will reply within one month, which is the deadline the law sets.
Why we are allowed to process it
UK GDPR requires a lawful basis for handling personal data. We rely on legitimate interests, for two things only:
- Website analytics: counting which pages people use, so we can improve them. It sets no cookies, stores no IP address and never receives your salary figures, and you can turn it off with one click (see Website Analytics below).
- Replying to the contact form: you chose to send us a message, and answering it is the whole point. We use what you send only to reply.
The calculator itself needs no lawful basis, because it never sends us your figures in the first place.
What we don't collect
Whatever you use myTakeHome for, we never receive:
- Your salary or any financial figures you enter. They stay in your browser, and are stripped from anything analytics sends
- Your name, email, or identity (unless you contact us)
- Advertising or marketing profiles. We use no ad networks and never sell data
- Account details. There are no user accounts and no registration
The browser extension goes further: it collects nothing whatsoever (see below).
How calculations work
All tax calculations run using JavaScript, entirely in your browser. The salary figures you enter are never transmitted to our servers or any third party. The one exception is under your control: if you copy a share link (or open a "Full breakdown" link from the extension), the figures are encoded in that URL so the calculation can be recreated, so only share links with people you trust.
Tax rates and thresholds are based on HMRC published rates and are bundled directly into the application code.
Website analytics (Umami)
The website uses Umami, a privacy-focused analytics service, to count which pages are useful. It sets no cookies. The extension contains no analytics of any kind.
- What it collects: the pages you visit, how you arrived (the referring site and any campaign tags), your browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language, and your approximate location (country, region and city). Umami works the location out from your IP address and does not store the address. It also counts a few interactions, such as clicking “Add to Chrome” or copying a share link.
- What it never collects: your salary or calculator settings. Results pages encode your figures in the web address; we strip those values out before any address is sent to Umami, and check again just before it goes. Only the bare page and any campaign tags remain. There is no advertising, no profile, and nothing that follows you to other sites.
- No cookies, so no banner: neither Umami nor the website sets any.
- Turning it off: use the switch below. It works straight away and lasts until you clear your browser data. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, nothing is counted from it at all.
- Who processes it: Umami Cloud, on our behalf, under Umami's privacy policy.
Browser extension
The myTakeHome browser extension collects nothing at all: no analytics, no cookies, no network requests.
- Permissions: The extension requires access to supported job board websites (Indeed, Reed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, TotalJobs, CWJobs) solely to detect salary information displayed on the page and inject take-home pay badges. It also uses Chrome’s storage API to save your settings (tax region, student loan plan, pension percentage).
- Local processing: All salary detection and tax calculations happen locally in your browser.
- No network requests: The extension makes no network requests. It does not phone home, send analytics, or communicate with any external server.
- Settings storage: Your preferences (tax year, region, student loan plan, pension contribution, enabled sites) are stored locally using Chrome’s sync storage API. This data syncs across your Chrome browsers if you are signed into Chrome, but is never accessible to us or any third party.
Cookies & local storage (website)
The website sets no cookies, and its analytics sets none either. Small values live in your browser's localStorage: your light/dark theme preference and, if you turn analytics off, a note saying so, stored as umami.disabled. Neither ever leaves your device. Your salary and settings are not stored between visits. They live only in the page URL while you use the calculator, which is what makes results shareable. Clearing your browser data removes all of the above.
Third-party services
Two third parties are involved, both under your control:
- Umami: website only, cookie-free analytics you can turn off (details above)
- Netlify: hosts the site and delivers contact-form submissions (below)
There are no advertising networks, social media pixels, customer data platforms, or error-reporting services that capture user data.

Children's privacy
myTakeHome is a general-purpose calculator tool. We do not knowingly collect any personal data from anyone, including children under the age of 13.
Contact form
If you use our contact form, we collect the information you voluntarily provide: your name, email address, category selection, and message. This data is:
- Processed by Netlify: submissions are handled by Netlify under their privacy policy
- Used solely to respond to your enquiry
- Deleted after resolution of the enquiry
- Never used for marketing or shared with third parties
How long we keep things
- Your salary figures: never, because we never receive them. They live in your browser and in the address bar, and go nowhere else.
- Contact form messages: kept while we deal with your enquiry and deleted once it is resolved, from both the Netlify dashboard and our email.
- Analytics: kept by Umami for the retention period of our Umami Cloud plan, then deleted automatically. It is usage data with salary figures already stripped out.
- Your analytics switch and settings: stored in your own browser until you clear them. We never see them.
Where your data goes
The limited data Umami and Netlify handle for us (analytics events, and contact form submissions) may be processed outside the UK: Umami Cloud runs servers in the United States and the EU, and Netlify is headquartered in the United States. Each publishes the safeguards it relies on for UK and EU transfers in its own privacy documentation, linked in the sections above.
Nothing else leaves your device. In particular, no transfer of any kind is involved in a calculation, on the website or in the extension.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable format.
For almost every visitor there is nothing to exercise these against, and that is the point of how this site is built: we hold no account, no profile and no salary history, because none of it is ever sent to us. In practice these rights bite on two things only, the message you sent us through the contact form and website analytics. You can object to the second yourself, instantly, with the switch under Website Analytics.

Complaints
If you think we have handled your data badly, please tell us first so we have a chance to put it right. You also have the right to complain directly to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK regulator for data protection, and you can do that whether or not you raise it with us.

Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. Analytics will stay cookie-free, and you will always be able to turn it off.
