Privacy Policy

The short version

Your salary never leaves your browser: calculations run locally on both the website and the extension. The website asks before setting any analytics cookies, and salary figures are stripped from anything analytics sends. The extension collects nothing at all. If you use the contact form, we receive what you choose to send (delivered by Netlify). Full detail below.

Overview

myTakeHome is a free UK salary calculator available as a website and a Chrome browser extension. This policy explains the small amount of data we handle and the choices you have. The calculator itself collects nothing: every calculation runs locally in your browser. The only data we ever receive is optional usage analytics on the website (and only if you accept the cookie banner), and anything you send us through the contact form.

What We Don't Collect

Whatever you use myTakeHome for, we never receive:

  • Your salary or any financial figures you enter. They stay in your browser, and are stripped from anything analytics sends
  • Your name, email, or identity (unless you contact us)
  • Advertising or marketing profiles. We use no ad networks and never sell data
  • Account details. There are no user accounts and no registration

The browser extension goes further: it collects nothing whatsoever (see below).

How Calculations Work

All tax calculations run using JavaScript, entirely in your browser. The salary figures you enter are never transmitted to our servers or any third party. The one exception is under your control: if you copy a share link (or open a "Full breakdown" link from the extension), the figures are encoded in that URL so the calculation can be recreated, so only share links with people you trust.

Tax rates and thresholds are based on HMRC published rates and are bundled directly into the application code.

Website Analytics (Google Analytics)

If, and only if, you accept the cookie banner, the website uses Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are useful. The extension contains no analytics of any kind.

  • What it collects:pages you visit, how you arrived (referrer), browser and device type, approximate location (country/city, derived by Google from your IP address), and a few interactions such as clicking "Add to Chrome" or copying a share link.
  • What it never collects: your salary or calculator settings. Results pages encode your figures in the web address; we strip those values out before any address is sent to Google. Only the bare page and any campaign tags remain. Google Signals is off, no advertising features are enabled, and nothing is used for ads personalisation.
  • Your consent, your choice:no analytics script loads and no cookies are set until you click Accept. If you click Reject, nothing ever loads. Change your mind any time via the "Cookie choices" link in the footer. Withdrawing is as easy as accepting and takes effect immediately.
  • Cookies and retention: on acceptance, Google Analytics sets its _ga cookies to tell returning browsers apart. We keep analytics data for 14 months. Google processes this data on our behalf under Google's privacy policy.

Browser Extension

The myTakeHome browser extension collects nothing at all: no analytics, no cookies, no network requests.

  • Permissions:The extension requires access to supported job board websites (Indeed, Reed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, TotalJobs) solely to detect salary information displayed on the page and inject take-home pay badges. It also uses Chrome's storage API to save your settings (tax region, student loan plan, pension percentage).
  • Local processing: All salary detection and tax calculations happen locally in your browser.
  • No network requests: The extension makes no network requests. It does not phone home, send analytics, or communicate with any external server.
  • Settings storage:Your preferences (tax year, region, student loan plan, pension contribution, enabled sites) are stored locally using Chrome's sync storage API. This data syncs across your Chrome browsers if you are signed into Chrome, but is never accessible to us or any third party.

Cookies & Local Storage (Website)

The website sets no cookies of its own. Google Analytics cookies exist only after you accept the banner (see above); reject or withdraw and there are none. Two small values live in your browser's localStorage: your light/dark theme preference and your cookie choice (remembering "no" requires storing it, and that value never leaves your device). Your salary and settings are not stored between visits. They live only in the page URL while you use the calculator, which is what makes results shareable. Clearing your browser data removes all of the above.

Third-Party Services

Two third parties are involved, both under your control:

  • Google Analytics: website only, loaded only after you accept the cookie banner (details above)
  • Netlify: hosts the site and delivers contact-form submissions (below)

There are no advertising networks, social media pixels, customer data platforms, or error-reporting services that capture user data.

External Links

This site contains links to official UK government resources (gov.uk) for reference. These external sites have their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to review.

Children's Privacy

myTakeHome is a general-purpose calculator tool. We do not knowingly collect any personal data from anyone, including children under the age of 13.

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. Analytics will always remain opt-in.
